Charleston Dentist Bridge - Facts about the implant supported bridge

When a tooth or teeth are missing, the dental bridge is one way to restore function and aesthetics. Dr. Greenberg offers a few different types of dental bridges in Charleston in order to meet the needs of specific cases. With the many advances in dental technology over the past several years, one treatment that has emerged is that of the implant supported dental bridge.

The implant-supported bridge is much like a traditional dental bridge; the difference being that the bridge relies on an implant for support instead of on adjacent teeth. The process works, in most cases, using a single implant for each tooth that is missing. Crowns are then fabricated to be connected in order to make one piece.

There are three parts to an implant-supported bridge. The foundation on which the bridge sits is formed by the implant. A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically inserted into the jawbone under local anesthesia. Through a thorough examination and consultation, your dentist will determine if implants are a viable option before recommending the procedure, as there are certain prerequisites required.

Once an implant is placed, healthy jaw bone will grow around it over the course of several months. This provides a very stable foundation necessary for chewing comfortably and confidently. After healing, an abutment, a small titanium cylinder is screwed onto the exposed portion of the implant. It is through the abutment that the bridge is anchored to the implant.

The final step in the implant-supported bridge is to place the custom fabricated restoration onto the abutment. Most restorations are made of porcelain fused to metal for a naturally beautiful appearance.

An implant-supported bridge is the ideal restoration of its kind due to the fact that you will feel more secure and confident with the implant than with a removable denture; and there will be less wear on adjacent teeth, as there is with most traditional bridges. Because the implant is integrated right into healthy jawbone, you can enjoy eating foods you love without concern.

Caring for an implant-supported bridge is as easy as your standard oral hygiene practices. Brush and floss daily, and receive your regular dental checkups, and your bridge will stand the test of time.

There is no reason to live with missing teeth. Move closer to your healthiest smile by correcting this issue with the most suitable dental bridge. Schedule your consultation with Dr. Greenberg to discuss your options.
