How long do bridges last?

Once you receive your new bridge it is cemented permanently to the prepared teeth.  Bridges can last a lifetime; however, they do sometimes fall out or come loose. Practicing good oral hygiene is one way to keep your bridge in good condition. Dental diseases can often cause damage to the gums, teeth, and even the bone that surrounds your teeth. To avoid damaging your dental bridge, avoid chewing hard foods and non food items such as pencils or pens. Routine checkups, professional cleanings, and brushing/flossing your teeth and gums a minimum of twice a day will help your bridge last a very long time.

The longevity of your dental bridge also depends on the type of dental bridge you opt for. There are three main types of dental bridges: Maryland, Traditional, and Cantilever. The Maryland bonded bridge is the least expensive and is less invasive to the teeth that surround the missing tooth.  With this type of bridge the false tooth is held in place by bands that are attached to the adjoining teeth. The most common type of bridge is the traditional bridge. This bridge consists of a false tooth that is held in place by crowns on either side. The third type is a cantilever bridge. This type is used when there are only teeth on one side of the gap that is being replaced with a false tooth. The type of bridge that you choose will determine exactly how long it will last.

Traditional bridges will usually last the longest. Cantilever bridges have a shorter lifespan due to the dental bridge being supported only on one side.
