Oral Cancer

Although the number of oral cancer cases has been steadily dropping, it doesn't mean that it still isn't reason for concern. The risk for developing oral cancer is still out there, and going to the dentist for an oral cancer screening is a smart move for anyone worried about their health and well-being.

Oral cancer is a form of cancer that may develop in a number of areas of the mouth, either on the lips, the oral cavity, or the throat. This means that it can develop anywhere on your gums, inside your cheeks, the roof of your mouth, your tongue, tonsils, or even far back on the palate. This cancer starts out in squamous cells, and is typically malignant.

While most individuals over the age of 45 make up the majority of new oral cancer cases, there has been a recent increase in cases in adults under the age of 40. While this reason is unknown, it is important for patients to talk to their dentist about the risks they may have of getting oral cancer, and to ask for a screening for oral cancer when necessary.

There are a number of risk factors that can increase your chances for developing oral cancer. While anyone can get it, your chances are increased if you use tobacco and/or alcohol. Males are at a higher risk, and those who are infected with HPV, or human papillomavirus, may also be at a higher risk for developing oral cancer. While these are not the only risk factors associated with oral cancer, they can cause reason for concern when it comes to the possibility of developing oral cancer.

If you are concerned that you may have or are at risk for oral cancer, it is essential that you discuss these concerns with your dentist. Dr. Greenberg has the ability to undergo screening for oral cancer if he feels there is a true concern of it developing, so schedule an appointment today to find out how you can protect yourself from developing oral cancer, or catch it early enough to receive proper treatment.
