Dental Veneers Charleston- The Veneers procedure

Dental veneers are one of the less intrusive procedures in dentistry, but there is still a lot that goes into the fine treatment of having a veneer placed properly. The most important step in the procedure is talking to your dentist to find out exactly how the veneer will help you and your dental needs. Getting a veneer usually requires three appointments – one for consultation and the other two for the preparation and placement. Depending on your needs, one or more teeth can have veneers placed on them simultaneously.

First, the tooth surface is trimmed to prepare it for the veneer. The dentist will usually trim about ½ millimeter of enamel from the tooth, which is about the same thickness of the veneer. Before the trimming begins, you and your dentist will decide if a local anesthetic should be administered.

Next, the dentist will take an impression of the tooth. This is needed to create the veneer. Most dentists will send the impression to a dental laboratory where the veneer will be produced. Others may have a milling machine, which uses a camera and computer technology to create the veneer in the dental office itself. Many dentists believe that the handmade product is of superior quality in terms of esthetic and physical properties, so they choose to send it to the laboratory.

In most cases, where the impression is sent to a laboratory, the wait time for the veneer is one to two weeks. Depending on your teeth, a temporary veneer may be needed while waiting for the final product. When the final veneer arrives, it will replace the temporary one.

Finally, when the veneer is ready, it will be placed onto your tooth using a special cement. The dentist will adjust the size of the veneer to make sure it fits perfectly, and clean your tooth before the final bonding is performed. Then a light beam is applied to the veneer to make the cement harden quickly and keep the veneer in place. After that, any excess cement will be removed and your bite will be evaluated.
