What are dental crowns?

Dr. Andrew Greenberg describes dental crowns as “caps” that are fabricated for patients to cover the structure of the natural tooth. This is done for a number of reasons. These versatile restorations are a great way for patients to achieve a beautiful, fully functional smile.

What are some reasons I may need a dental crown?

The best way to determine if you need a dental crown is to connect with our dentist. An evaluation will help Dr. Andrew Greenberg decide if a patient can benefit from the placement of this restoration. There are several situations in which a patient may need to have a dental crown placed.

  • A dental crown may be used to cover a natural tooth that has had root canal therapy, which makes it brittle and more susceptible to damage.
  • A dental crown may be used to cover a natural tooth that has a large filling, which can compromise the strength of the tooth.
  • A dental crown may be used to restore a dental implant, t and function as a tooth replacement.
  • Dental crowns may be used in conjunction with a false tooth called a pontic to fabricate a bridge for replacing missing teeth.

Process of obtaining a dental crown

Dr. Andrew Greenberg of Mouth Carolina Dentistry, PA is a committed dentist who can provide restorations such as dental crowns for patients who need them. The process begins with an evaluation. This determines if a patient is an appropriate candidate for dental crowns. During this evaluation, x-rays may be taken to check the health of the natural tooth. If patients are considered a candidate for a dental crown, the process of preparation begins. Dr. Andrew Greenberg will reduce the structure of the tooth which eliminates unwanted bulk when the crown is placed. Impressions are taken with special materials that mold to the tooth to create a duplicate of the surrounding area. These impressions are then sent to a dental laboratory with special instructions from the dentist to the ceramist for the fabrication of the final crown. This includes specifics on the color, shape, and size of the restoration. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it. Dr. Andrew Greenberg calls the patient back to the office when the restoration arrives at his practice approximately a week later when it is ready to be cemented in place. When patients come for their second visit, the dental crown is placed over the natural tooth and patients leave with a brand-new smile! The entire process can take approximately one week and is a wonderful solution for many of our patients seeking effective restoration of the natural smile!
