Your dentist in Charleston, SC ensures your comfort
Most people do not relish the thought of undergoing dental treatment. Our team understands this, and takes measures to provide the highest standard of dental care possible. Through our concentrated efforts, we hope that you will find us to be your ideal dental family, a practice in which you can feel comfortable and confident about your oral health. In building trusting relationships with our patients, we empower them to take control of their health through optimal hygiene practices, coupled with regular dental visits.
Even with the extra steps we take to promote comfort, we understand that there are those who have avoided visiting the dentist for many years, maybe even decades, due to dental anxiety. Fear of sitting in the dentist’s chair may stem from a number of things. Perhaps you have had an unpleasant dental experience, or you have been affected by the story of someone else’s experience. For some, anxiety is increased by embarrassment over a strong gag reflex or the state of their oral health.
We get it. No one wants to show unhealthy teeth to their dentist, of all people. However, because we know the devastating effects of dental anxiety, we are here to help our patients get the stress-free care they need to feel good about their smiles again.
One way we promote comfortable dental experiences is to offer nitrous oxide sedation to nervous patients. Nitrous oxide, a colorless, odorless gas, has been used extensively throughout dental history. In our office, this sedative can make a tremendous difference in all types of treatments, from deep cleanings to root canal therapy.
Quickly effective, nitrous oxide promotes feelings of wellbeing, even euphoria. Though this sedative would not be considered “sleep dentistry,” the calmness achieved is effective at helping patients get through necessary treatment without fear. Throughout treatment, the response to external stimulation is diminished, without impeding the patient’s ability to communicate with doctor and staff.
There are several benefits to nitrous oxide, which is why we incorporate this sedative into dental treatments when needed. Breathed in through a comfortable mask worn over the nose, nitrous requires no needles or prescription. Within moments, the sedative effects are felt. As needed, we are able to adjust the delivery of nitrous oxide to ensure the proper level of sedation for total comfort. As treatment ends, we taper off the dose of nitrous until the patient is completely alert. Because the effects of nitrous oxide wear off immediately, patients are able to resume normal activities safely, even driving themselves home.
