Dentist in Charleston describes the situations when patients may require root canal therapy
There are times when a dentist may recommend a patient have a root canal performed. Dr. Andrew Greenberg of Charleston, SC is a professional who can offer this treatment in his practice alongside other restorative solutions. At Mouth Carolina Dentistry, we are committed to educating patients on procedures that can improve their dental health and wellness such as the root canal procedure.

What is a root canal?
Root canal therapy, called endodontic therapy by dentists, is a procedure used to save a tooth from extraction. This procedure removes the dental pulp from inside of a tooth, which is a collection of blood vessels and nerves that can send pain signals to the brain. However, if a dentist accesses this inner portion of the tooth and removes the dental pulp, the problem can be addressed while maintaining the tooth’s structure and eliminating the need for removal. This, in turn, saves patients money on addressing an extracted tooth with a denture, bridge, or implant.
Why might root canal therapy be recommended?
Patients may be told that they could benefit from root canal therapy if they:
- Have a severe toothache due to an infection inside of a tooth
- Have an abscess present
- Have experienced damage or injury to the tooth that impacts the dental pulp
- Have a cavity that is too large to treat with a filling or that affects the pulp
- Have symptoms of an infection inside of the tooth
What are alternative treatments?
Root canal therapy is often seen as a last resort before extraction of a tooth. If the patient declines root canal therapy, or if the procedure does not prove to be successful, removal of the tooth is the only alternative solution available.
