FAQs on Veneers

What dental problems can veneers correct?

They are extremely versatile, because they cover the visible surface of the teeth. They can be used to treat minor chips and fractures, permanent discoloration, misshapen or crooked teeth, and more.

Am I a good candidate?

If you don’t love your smile, the answer is probably, “yes.” Most people with cosmetic dental concerns are good candidates. The most important consideration is that your teeth be healthy. If you have tooth damage or decay, we may recommend a crown, which provides the same cosmetic benefits as well as functional restoration.

How long does the procedure take?

Veneers involve at least two office visits. We begin by preparing the teeth, taking impressions, and formulating a custom design. The veneers are fabricated in a top quality dental laboratory, and then sent to our office. When they are ready, we will schedule your next appointment. The entire process usually takes around two or three weeks.

How should I care for my new veneers?

Teeth that have been treated with veneers require essentially the same care as untreated teeth do. Good oral hygiene and regular dental care are essential to the longevity of veneers, because these habits keep the underlying tooth healthy. Additionally, be sure to wear appropriate safety gear if you participate in contact sports.

What is the difference between veneers and crowns?

Both are dental restorations, which are usually made of porcelain. A veneer is very thin, and only covers one side of the tooth. It is usually the best choice for cosmetic enhancement of a healthy tooth. A crown is thicker, and covers all sides of the tooth. It is recommended for restoring a damaged, broken, badly decayed, or weakened tooth.

What are temporary veneers?

These are usually made of tooth colored resin, and placed on prepared teeth to provide protection while the final veneers are being fabricated.
