Types of Veneers
A dental veneer is a very thin layer of a tooth colored material, which is bonded to the surface of a tooth. It may be used to cover minor flaws or to alter the overall appearance of the tooth. This is one of the most popular and versatile procedures in cosmetic dentistry.
Veneer materials
If you are considering dental veneers, you may be confused by the various types. However, it is actually much simpler than it may seem. We use porcelain, which is the most common material for veneers. Some dentists also offer composite resin, but it is not as durable as porcelain. You may see reference to specific brands of veneers, which are virtually all porcelain.
Veneer preparation
Some veneers are called “low prep” or “no prep.” They are not actually a different type of veneer; they are simply a bit thinner than average. The ideal thickness depends on several factors. We will customize the design after performing an examination. If the tooth is crooked or dark-colored, a slightly thicker veneer may provide better results. Alternately, if the veneer is simply covering a minor chip, the ultra-thin design may be effective. The thinner the veneer, the less tooth preparation is needed. However, even the thickest veneers only require minimal enamel reduction.
Temporary vs. permanent
After teeth have been prepared, the final impressions are taken and sent to the laboratory. Therefore, the teeth are prepared about two weeks before the final veneers are placed. In some cases, this can cause sensitivity or leave the teeth vulnerable to excessive staining. If needed, temporary dental veneers, usually made of resin, are worn while the permanent, porcelain ones are being fabricated. They are placed during the same appointment when the teeth are prepared. In addition to protecting the tooth, the temporary veneers provide immediate cosmetic improvement.
